Come and hear us

·    Spectrum is a small (at present 18 strong) mixed-voice choir, with a wide repertoire of light popular music

·    We aim to put on two major shows a year, plus guest appearances, charity events, festivals and competitions

Come and sing with us

·    We are at present looking for new members - especially in the tenor and bass sections, so if there are any singers out there in the Epsom area who would like to try something a little different, why not come along to a rehearsal and try us out. Sight reading is not essential - tapes of individual parts are available if required - but enthusiasm for our type of music, plus commitment to the choir, certainly are.

·    We rehearse every Tuesday from 7-45 to 10 at the Vale School, Beaconsfield Road, Langley Vale, Epsom

·    If you are interested, please contact  our Publicity Officer on 01372 723398 or e-mail spectrum.coles@btinternet.com

Objectives of the choir

The name 'Spectrum' reflects the choir's desire to sing in a wide range of musical styles; with this in mind, we aim

·         to enjoy and improve choral singing by taking part in regular rehearsals

  • to provide entertainment by formal and informal performances
  • to take part in competitions and festivals

A brief history

In 1984 a small group of singers, looking for something a little different, came together under the direction of local musician Richard Fentiman; Spectrum was born. They soon began performing, appearances including shows in the Meyers Hall at the Epsom Playhouse, Bourne Hall, and also at Tadworth Court with compere 'Boyzee' of 'Only fools and horses', helping raise considerable sums for that Children's charity.

Following Richard's departure, Spectrum continued to flourish under the baton of another local man, its erstwhile accompanist Robert Fowler, but in 1994 we looked further afield and recruited Zlatan M Fazlic, a graduate of the Academy of Music at Sarajevo University. Under Zlatan's direction our numbers grew and we became more versatile, taking part in (and winning) competitions and festivals both locally and throughout the country. We also began recording a CD at Kingston University Studios, a project we have recently completed. In 1998 ZIatan left us to take up a teaching post in Edinburgh.

Spectrum was then very fortunate in persuading Richard Apsley to become our Musical Director. Under his guidance the choir adopted a more relaxed style, with the emphasis on entertainment. In the five years he was with us, Spectrum staged a series of major shows at the Adrian Mann Theatre, Ewell, the Secombe Theatre, Sutton, and the Epsom Playhouse and appeared as guests at numerous concerts and festivals.

However, by 2003 Richards professional career had taken off in a big way and he regrettably had to give up his post with Spectrum, though he continues to be associated with the choir. For his successor, Spectrum once again found the answer from abroad, this time in the person of Mary Jo Paranzino from Philadelphia.

Rehearsals

Rehearsals take place on Tuesdays from 7-45 to 10 pm at The Vale School, Beaconsfield Road, Langley Vale, Epsom, plus additional dates and venues as required prior to performances. Members are expected to attend rehearsals regularly, especially in the run up to performances.

Subscriptions

There is an annual subscription of £15, plus a monthly fee of £10. Music is loaned free, but must be returned on leaving the choir. A small deposit is taken for the loan of costumes. All items of costume must also be returned on leaving.

Repertoire

Spectrum's repertoire is taken from a growing library of over 100 items. The range of music is varied and includes blues, jazz, rock, ballads, songs from films and shows, popular music both old and new. Our 'Music of the Millennium' concert, June 1999, presented a selection of music from the last 1000 years and throughout 2000 and 2001we put on several different shows featuring songs 'From Stage and Screen'. Our main show of 2002 'Jubilee' featured songs from the last 50 years. Members may suggest items for inclusion. Pieces are normally performed with piano accompaniment or sung 'a capella', though occasionally with other instruments.

Performances

Spectrum organises its own concerts at least once a year and frequently makes guest appearances for other choirs. The choir regularly takes part in music competitions and festivals and performs in charity events. A CD - 'A Spectrum of Song' - has recently been completed and is available (price £7-50) from members of the choir.

Spectrum also holds social events such as quiz nights, meals out, garden parties, etc, both for the enjoyment of members and to raise money for choir funds and for charity. Each year Spectrum adopts a local charity - in 1999 we supported SeeAbility and in 2000 we raised money for St Raphael's Hospice in Cheam. Our charity for 2001 was ALDAG (Ashtead Learning Difficulties Action Group), for 2002 Epsom Riding for the Disabled Association, for 2003 the Macmillan Butterfly Cancer Unit in Epsom and for 2004 we have chosen the Epsom  St Johns ambulance appeal.
